Explain with a physical law why something works or fails.
What you learn
- State a physical law with its condition of validity and use it to write a numerical prediction before measuring.
- Calculate weight, potential energy, power and efficiency in a mechanical case with made-up data.
- Predict current, resistance and heat in a conductor with Ohm's law, R = ρ · L / A, R = R₀ · (1 + α · ΔT) and P = I² · R.
- Relate the charge a battery delivers to the chemical reaction that produces it, in moles of electrons and of zinc.
- Explain with a law, and with numbers, why something works or fails, comparing the prediction with a measurement.
Who it is for
Young people aged 16 to 24 starting out in engineering or in a technical trade. No prerequisites in the tree; it helps to have seen physics and chemistry in secondary school. Examples from the electrical specialty.
