When you finish you will be able to
Set up a problem with equations and estimate the order of magnitude before calculating.
What you learn
- Set up a problem in four steps: the unknown with its unit, the data and assumptions, the relationship, and solving with letters.
- Write quantities in scientific notation and with prefixes of the International System of Units (SI), including squared units such as mm².
- Estimate the order of magnitude of a result before calculating it, with one figure per datum.
- Solve by hand and with a spreadsheet, and compare both results with the estimate.
- Explain why a result makes sense with three checks: units, size and limiting cases.
Who it is for
Young people aged 16 to 24 who are starting out in engineering or a technical trade. It requires no earlier course in this series: it uses the arithmetic and algebra of secondary school. Examples from electrical engineering.
Before this course
