Find, read and apply a new source when a problem goes beyond what you know.
What you learn
- Write, when a problem goes beyond what you know, the exact question with its conditions and the words to search for it.
- Find sources for that question and judge them with five criteria: currency, relevance, authority, accuracy and purpose.
- Extract from a technical source the data or the method with all its conditions: reference, material or model, and the range in which it holds.
- Apply the source to your problem and check units, order of magnitude and range, writing down what the source doesn't say.
- Build a yearly continuing development plan with checkable outcomes, tests spread out over time and a seven-column log.
Who it is for
Young people aged 16 to 24 who are studying or starting out in engineering or a technical trade. It helps to have done “Reading in depth and writing”. Examples from electrical engineering; nothing is measured in the class: the motor and winding data are assumed and we only calculate.
