Write down what problem you are solving, for whom and within what limits, before proposing a solution.
What you learn
- Separate, in a request, the solution it brings from the problem behind it, with questions that propose no solutions.
- Identify whom a problem is for (who pays, who uses, who suffers the consequences and who decides) and name a clash between their needs.
- Classify a problem's limits into constraints, scope, a success criterion with a number, preferences and assumptions.
- List what you don't know, with how to find it out and how you know it today, and choose what to look for first.
- Write a six-line problem definition and correct it with the client until they recognize it as their own.
Who it is for
Young people aged 16 to 24 who are studying or starting work in engineering or a technical trade. It helps to have done “Designing to requirements” and “Communicating to any audience”. Examples from electrical work, without measuring or touching anything electrical.
