What you learn
- Decide whether a person is in charge of a job, using the three conditions that an international register of engineers requires and the question of whether they were there from the start.
- Write the job sheet for a piece of work before starting: scope, measurable success criteria, deadline, hours, assumptions, reviewer and method.
- Write a technical decision with the number that supports it and what would make it change.
- Review work done under your supervision by redoing calculations and asking about the method, and sign stating what you reviewed.
- Write a close-out report with deviations as percentages and what was yours, and keep a record of responsible-charge experience that others can verify.
Who it is for
Young people aged 16 to 24 who study engineering or a technical program and already work in teams. It helps to have done judgement with incomplete information; schedule, cost and economic decisions; ethics; and coordinating without being the boss. Examples from electrical engineering, always on paper and with assumed data.
